Diversity Club

During the 2021/2022 School Year I acted as an advisor for the Galvin Middle School Diversity Club.

The club follows the data-driven practices of Gender-Sexuality Alliances giving students space to lead efforts in education, advocacy and also providing social space for peer-to-peer connection. The club has an additional emphasis on inter-sectional identities and amplifying all voices that may not otherwise have a space within the school to explore and celebrate their unique identities.

Examples of initiatives and club norms:

Education: Students led a Land Acknowledgment to celebrate Native American & Indigenous People Heritage Month

Students researched the native lands and read a land acknowledgment on the morning announcements.

Advocacy: Student Led Poster PSA Campaign

Students created poster PSAs to hang around school property to promote inclusion of all sexualities and genders.

Social Connection: Creating a Space to Share

All meetings conclude with time for students to share their "rose, bud thorn" with the group.

Data on the Effectiveness of Diversity Club

Students Participating in Diversity Club were asked to take surveys measuring if the Diversity Club has bolstered protective factors.

When Students were asked if they had any additional thoughts on how Diversity Club affected them, they shared the following:

  • “Diversity helps me feel accepted, but it also motivates me to try to accept others at my school.”

  • “Diversity Club is a great space to break away from stressors at school and just be yourself.”

  • “I feel much better that there are more people who have the same identity as I do.”

  • “It makes me feel safe and it helps me express myself.”
